Describe the environment topic your group will address And what local issue within this topic did your team select?

Our group has chosen to cover the highly publicized global phenomenon known as global warming. We decided to pick a smaller topic that can have great impact on global warming. Since we have entered the Lexus Challenge it is only fitting that we cover an issue of global warming incorporating cars. There are so many options that our group could approach to help global warming related to cars. Most people in the past have tried to handle the problem of Carbon Dioxide or CO2 emissions by making alternate sources of energy to run vehicles. This is a great idea but it is an unrealistic feat for our group to fix in just a few short weeks. A simpler way to help the environment is to ensure that vehicle tires are properly inflated. Cars use less gas and do not create as much friction when they have properly inflated tires. This minimizes the difficulty of turning the wheels and thus tires will last longer and cause the car to emit less gas. It is easy to inflate tires at any local gas station.  It is also incredibly easy to test the tire pressure by using a simple electronic device that detects the pressure in the tires. The Shipley School “Green Gators” Environmental Club can help raise awareness of this problem in our local area. We have informed our school and community through flyers and E-mails. We traveled to the local bus company and tested tire pressures. We can help the environment one car at a time by spreading the news about tire pressure and the effects it has on cars, and by conserving more gas and preventing carbon dioxide emissions.
